The Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) has announced the launch of its Kids Athletics Programme in Gilgit, set to commence this Thursday. After successful phases in major cities like Lahore and Karachi earlier this year, the programme is now being extended to the northern region, providing a valuable opportunity for children in Gilgit to engage in sports.
According to the President of AFP, Brig. (R) Wajahat Hussain, the initiative is part of a larger effort to promote athletics among children aged 4 to 14 years. The programme was originally held in May, but due to the hot weather and summer vacations, the activities were temporarily paused. The cooler climate of Gilgit, along with the resumption of school, makes it an ideal location for the next phase of this initiative.
Children from all districts of Gilgit are expected to participate in this event, which focuses on teaching the basics of athletics. The Kids Athletics Programme provides young participants with an introduction to running, jumping, and throwing events, fostering early physical development and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle.
Brig. Wajahat Hussain emphasized the importance of involving children in sports from an early age. “We aim to promote fitness, teamwork, and discipline through athletics,” he stated, highlighting the AFP’s commitment to nurturing talent across the country, especially in underrepresented areas like Gilgit-Baltistan.
With the Gilgit session kicking off soon, the Athletics Federation hopes this programme will inspire a new generation of athletes who can go on to represent Pakistan in national and international competitions.
