Faisalabad, 24 September 2024: Pakistan’s cricket selectors have named a 15-player squad for the first Test of the highly anticipated series against England, which is set to take place in Multan from 7-11 October. The announcement, made on Tuesday, comes with strategic decisions aimed at ensuring player rest and preparation for the crucial clash.

In a move recommended by Pakistan’s head coach Jason Gillespie, the selected players will be withdrawn from the ongoing Champions One-Day Cup playoffs, allowing them time to recharge ahead of the challenging Test series. The squad is set to assemble in Multan on 30 September, with a training camp scheduled to begin on 1 October.

Pakistan Squad for the 1st Test:

  • Shan Masood (captain)
  • Saud Shakeel (vice-captain)
  • Aamir Jamal
  • Abdullah Shafique
  • Abrar Ahmed
  • Babar Azam
  • Mir Hamza
  • Mohammad Huraira
  • Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper)
  • Naseem Shah
  • Noman Ali
  • Saim Ayub
  • Salman Ali Agha
  • Sarfaraz Ahmed (wicket-keeper)
  • Shaheen Shah Afridi

Key Changes:

The most notable change in the squad is the inclusion of experienced left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who has taken 47 wickets in 15 Tests. Noman replaces fast bowler Khurram Shahzad, who is out due to injury. This adjustment strengthens Pakistan’s spin department, with Multan’s pitch traditionally known to support spin bowlers.

Consistency in Selection:

While the likes of Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Ali, who were part of Pakistan’s recent series against Bangladesh, were not selected for the first Test, they remain in the selectors’ long-term plans. According to the PCB, the current selection policy emphasizes consistency and continuity, and the management believes that a squad of 15 players is sufficient for the Test. Both players have been encouraged to continue playing competitive domestic cricket in the Champions One-Day Cup and President’s Cup, which begins on 3 October, to stay match-fit and prepared for future opportunities.

Jason Gillespie’s Vision:

Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, Jason Gillespie, emphasized the importance of managing players’ workloads and the excitement surrounding the upcoming series.

“With a busy domestic and international cricket schedule, it makes sense to give our players some much-needed rest ahead of the Test series against England,” Gillespie said. “We are very much looking forward to the series against England here in Pakistan and cannot wait for it to begin. We are excited about playing in front of our wonderful supporters.”

Looking Ahead:

Pakistan’s Test squad, led by Shan Masood, will look to make a strong statement in the first match of the series. Multan, known for its vocal and passionate cricket fans, will provide a challenging yet supportive environment for the home team. England’s Test team, known for their attacking style of play under the guidance of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, will pose a significant challenge for Pakistan, making this series one of the most eagerly anticipated contests in recent times.

With the team well-balanced between experienced campaigners and emerging talent, Pakistan will aim to start the series on a strong note and continue their good run in home Test matches.

The first Test will run from 7-11 October at Multan Cricket Stadium.
